HOUSTON (AP) — When running back Dare Ogunbowale was thrust into action as Houston’s emergency kicker Sunday against Tampa Bay he was ready for whatever he might be asked to do.He handled the opening kickoff of the second half with kicker Kaʻimi Fairbairn out with a quadriceps injury and figured he’d soon be called on to kick an extra point. But his mindset changed after the Texans attempted 2-point conversions on three consecutive touchdowns.“Once they started doing the 2-point, I figured I was off it,” he said. “But I was staying ready for it.”And with the game tied in the fourth quarter, the Texans called on him to attempt his first field goal since high school. His 29-yard kick sailed straight through the uprights to put the Texans on top 33-30 with nine minutes to go. They went on to a 39-37 victory on a late TD pass by C.J. Stroud.“To win games in the league you never know what’s going to happen,” Ogunbowale said. “That game as you saw came down to the wire. LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) — Erik van Rooyen made a 16-foot eagle putt on the par-5 closing hole Sunday to win the World Wide Technology Championship, a day after Matt Kuchar squandered a six-stroke lead with a late meltdown.Playing alongside Kuchar at Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante on the tip of Baja California, van Rooyen played the back nine in 8-under 28 in a 9-under 63. The 33-year-old South African finished at 27-under 261 for his second PGA Tour victory, two strokes ahead of Kuchar and Camilo Villegas.Kuchar and Villegas each shot 66, with the 45-year-old Kuchar parring the final four holes. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kenny Moore returned two Bryce Young interceptions for touchdowns, Jonathan Taylor caught a touchdown pass from Gardner Minshew and the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-13 on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak.Indianapolis’ much-maligned defense had allowed at least 37 points in each of its past three games and had allowed more points than any team in the league, but had no problem slowing down the No. 1 overall pick and a mostly listless Panthers offense.Moore became the first Colts player in history with two pick-6s in a game and the first NFL player to accomplish the feat since Tampa Bay’s Mike Edwards did it against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 of the 2021 season.Young finished 24 of 39 for 173 yards with three interceptions to fall to 1-6 as an NFL starter.Minshew threw for 127 yards and Taylor ran for 47 yards for the Colts (4-5). Rookie QB Tyson Bagent commits 4 of 5 turnovers in loss to the New Orleans Saints as Chicago Bears ponder when Justin Fields will return

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:47:27 GMT

The Chicago Bears’ offensive unraveling started with about 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter Sunday at the Caesars Superdome.Trailing the New Orleans Saints by a touchdown, rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent sent a pass toward Darnell Mooney in the middle of the field, but safety Marcus Maye jumped in front of it for an interception.Bagent hopped a few times and then dropped to the ground for a few seconds as he processed the turnover. There were far too many of those moments in the Saints’ 24-17 win.Maye’s interception was one of five Saints takeaways, including four off Bagent. In what could be one of his last starts in place of injured starter Justin Fields — if not the last — Bagent threw three interceptions and lost a fumble. He committed three of those turnovers on the Bears’ final four drives of the fourth quarter — with the game within reach thanks to some big defensive stops.“It really just all comes down to myself in that ...

Column: The Superdome has been a house of horrors for Chicago Bears QBs. Can Tyson Bagent reverse the trend?

The first start for a backup quarterback can be the best one a lot of the time. That’s a theory one veteran personnel man holds.“Nobody has any tape on you,” he said. “They don’t know who you are. They don’t know how you throw the ball. They don’t know what your game is. They don’t know how you’re being used.“A lot of backups can win their first game, and I have seen it over time. Some of them didn’t have any arm strength but they do things a little different.”Tyson Bagent won his first start for the Bears in Week 7, a 30-12 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders at Soldier Field. It’s worth wondering if that result played a factor in owner Mark Davis’ decision to fire general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels on Tuesday. The second act wasn’t quite as smooth for Bagent in a 30-13 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 232 yards and two ...
