Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:01:00 GMT

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik was asked if he felt any butterflies about his first season as a starter for the ninth-ranked Tigers. “I’m excited,” Klubnik said quickly with a smile. He then used “excited” five more times in his two minute answer. Told of his passer’s exuberance, first-year Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley smirked. “You got to calm him down sometimes, he’s so amped up,” Riley said. “And that’s certainly not a bad thing.” Especially if the sophomore passer channels high energy into high-scoring performances. Klubnik grabbed attention as a freshman backup for D.J. Uiagalelei last season, entering when the Tigers’ offense struggled against Syracuse and rallying the team from 11 points down in the second half to a 27-21 victory. When Uiagalelei struggled again a few weeks later in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game against North Carolina, Klubnik once more got the call and delivered with a high-octane showing in a 39-10 w...

BANGKOK (AP) — Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who recently returned from exile and began serving an eight-year prison term, has requested a royal pardon, a senior member of the outgoing Cabinet said Thursday. ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Jim Harbaugh is used to being busy on Saturdays in the fall. When No. 2 Michigan plays East Carolina on Saturday at the Big House, though, Harbaugh will have some free time. Harbaugh will start serving a three-game suspension, imposed by the school in an attempt to lessen eventual punishment for breaking NCAA rules, when perhaps the best college team he has coached kicks off the season.Harbaugh said going to his son’s game might be an option for his afternoon activities, adding he didn’t know if he would watch his team play on TV — or not.“It’s uncharted waters,” he saidHarbaugh was knocked out of games as a quarterback at Michigan and in the NFL with a broken arm along with knee and shoulder injuries, but he said this blow hits different.“I’ve heard people comment that it’s a slap on the wrist,” he said. “It’s more like a baseball bat to the kneecaps.”Harbaugh’s game-day roll will be filled by defensive coordinator Jesse Minter against...

Investors’ shift to low-cost funds brings average fees down

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:01:00 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Fund investors are keeping more of what’s theirs. Fees for mutual funds and exchange-traded funds fell to a record low last year, according to Morningstar. Fund investors paid about $37 in fees for every $10,000 invested, down from $40 in 2021. Altogether, that saved them a collective $9.8 billion. While that doesn’t change the fact that many stock and bond funds stuck investors with losses last year, it means they at least weren’t even worse. Funds take out their fees whether prices are rising or falling. Finding a lower-cost fund isn’t a guarantee of better performance, but it means a fund has a head start on higher-cost rivals when it comes to after-fee returns, which are what count. Investors have noticed, and they’re pouring into the lowest-cost funds as a result. The cheapest 20% of funds attracted $394 billion in net new investment last year, according to Morningstar. The remainder of the funds, meanwhile, saw $734 billion leave. I...

Microsoft to stop packaging Teams and Office software in Europe to head off EU antitrust action

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:01:00 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Microsoft will stop packaging its Teams videoconferencing app with its Office software in Europe in an effort to head off antitrust penalties by regulators. The tech giant also said Thursday that it would take steps to make it easier for competing products to work alongside its software. The announcement comes a month after the European Union’s executive Commission, the 27-nation bloc’s top competition enforcer, opened a formal investigation over concerns that bundling Teams with Office gives the company an unfair edge over competitors. The investigation was triggered by a complaint filed in 2020 by Slack Technologies, maker of popular workplace messaging software. Slack, owned by business software maker Salesforce, alleged that Microsoft was abusing its market dominance to eliminate competition — in violation of EU laws — by illegally combining Teams with its Office suite, which includes Word, Excel and Outlook.“Today we are announcing proactive chan...
