Nearly half of Americans think the US is spending too much on Ukraine aid, an AP-NORC poll says

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 09:37:34 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — As lawmakers in Washington weigh sending billions more in federal support to Kyiv to help fight off Russian aggression, close to half of the U.S. public thinks the country is spending too much on aid to Ukraine, according to polling from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Those sentiments, driven primarily by Republicans, help explain the hardening opposition among conservative GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill who are rebuffing efforts from President Joe Biden to approve a new tranche of Ukraine aid, arguing that the money would be better spent for domestic priorities.Yet opposition to aid is down slightly from where it was a month ago in another AP-NORC poll. Now, 45% say the U.S. government is spending too much on aid to Ukraine in the war against Russia, compared with 52% in October. That shift appears to come mostly from Republicans: 59% now say too much is spent on Ukraine aid, but that’s down from 69% in October.Nonetheless, the Republi...

DALLAS (AP) — Just minutes after President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot as his motorcade rolled through downtown Dallas, Associated Press reporter Peggy Simpson rushed to the scene and immediately attached herself to the police officers who had converged on the building from which a sniper’s bullets had been fired.“I was sort of under their armpit,” Simpson said, noting that every time she was able to get any information from them, she would rush to a pay phone to call her editors, and then “go back to the cops.” Simpson, now 84, is among the last surviving witnesses who are sharing their stories as the nation marks the 60th anniversary of the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination on Wednesday. “A tangible link to the past is going to be lost when the last voices from that time period are gone,” said Stephen Fagin, curator at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the Texas School Book Depository, where Lee Harvey Oswald’s snip...

She is the most important of a trio of influential women surrounding the fiery outsider who shot to the presidency of South America’s second-largest economy.Karina Milei, who barely speaks in public, was tasked with introducing her brother Sunday night after he won a presidential runoff election with 55.7% of the vote, the highest percentage in a general election since the return of democracy in 1983.“Without her, none of this would have been possible,” Milei told the crowd that chanted “Olé, olé, boss, boss.”Milei enjoyed a meteoric rise to the presidency, making the leap from television commentator to lawmaker two years ago. Lacking a group of well-known political advisers, he has surrounded himself with a group of women who are set to be key players in his administration....

UCSF study reveals THC can affect blood vessels

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 09:37:34 GMT

(KRON) -- It's long been known that people who smoke tobacco are at a higher risk of having heart problems. Now, a team of researchers at UCSF have found that marijuana products also pose the same risk. What's particularly interesting is that burning any plant can release toxic chemicals, but apparently eating THC products can be risky too. Since last summer, UCSF cardiovascular researchers have studied 44 people to learn the effects that marijuana has on their blood vessels and hearts. The control group included healthy adults between 18 and 50 years old. Other groups include chronic tobacco smokers, those who smoke weed at least three times a week, people who only take THC edibles and people who aren't exposed to any of these. "We've been doing a lot of research in rats that's indicated that marijuana smoke has similar cardiovascular harmful effects as tobacco smoke," said Dr. Matt Springer, UCSF cardiovascular researcher. "Now we actually see for the first time that the smoke is h...

In response, a recall effort has been launched against two school board members.Back in September, two of three members of the Sunol Glen Unified School District board voted to only allow the American flag and the California flag to be flown over the district’s one school.  The decision prevents the school from flying a Pride flag.A board meeting became very heated, and the two board members, Linda Hurley and Ryan Jergensen, have received a lot of blowback for that decision.  Study reveals THC smoke can have similar effects of tobacco This past Saturday, a group called “United for Sunol Glen” launched an effort to recall Hurley and Jergensen. On their website, they claim that the pair are “obstructing civil discourse by silencing opposing voices” and that they need to be recalled in order to ...

NFL upholds four-game suspension of Broncos safety Kareem Jackson, costing him $558K in lost wages

DENVER (AP) — This time, Kareem Jackson caught no breaks from the NFL, which denied his appeal of his four-game suspension for a high hit on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs that came on his third play back from his first suspension.Hearing officer Derrick Brooks, jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA, upheld the punishment handed down a day earlier. Brooks also heard Jackson’s last appeal, for an illegal hit on a Green Bay tight end last month, and cut that four-game suspension in half. Jackson will miss games against the Browns, Texans, Chargers and Lions, the last three on the road, before he’s allowed to return against New England on Christmas Eve.His suspension comes at a critical time for the Broncos (5-5), who own the league’s longest active winning streak at four games as they try to become just the fourth team to reach the playoffs after starting 1-5.Complicating matters is the ankle injury suffered by his fill-in, PJ Locke, that sidelined him S...
