‘Hajj is not Mecca’: Why prayers at Mount Arafat are the spiritual peak of Islamic pilgrimage

ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia (AP) — They came in the dark of night, in the thousands, to clamber up the rocky hill called Mount Arafat. The mound southeast of Mecca is little-known outside Islam. For non-Muslims, the circling of the Kaaba — the black, cube-shaped structure in the holy city — is the most arresting visual moment associated with the annual Hajj pilgrimage. But for Muslims, it was Tuesday’s rite of praying at Arafat that represented the sum and substance of the Hajj. The hill and the Day of Arafat, as the second day of the annual pilgrimage is called, hold immense significance in Islam. Arafat is mentioned in the Quran and it is where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have given his last sermon on his final Hajj. According to traditional sayings of the prophet, the Day of Arafat is the most sacred day of the year, when God draws near to the faithful and forgives their sins. The moment of closeness to God makes it the most personally resonant part of the pilgrimage for many.By 4 a.m...Ex-Audi boss convicted of fraud in automaker’s diesel emissions scandal

A German court handed Stadler a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and ordered him to pay a fine of 1.1 million euros ($1.2 million), some of which will go to charitable groups. The sentence resulted from an agreement between his lawyers, the judge and prosecutors after he pleaded guilty last month. The former head of Volkswagen’s luxury division admitted wrongdoing and regret for his failure to keep rigged cars off the market even after the scandal had become public knowledge. The Munich regional court also sentenced the former head of engine development, Wolfgang Hatz, and a former Audi engineer, identified only as Giovanni P. for privacy reasons, to suspended prison sentences and fines. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma is about giving and getting rides to the airport from friends. Here's the email: Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Hey Jaime. My name is Paul and I’m emailing you this morning because one of my best friends just blew me off after I asked him for a ride to the airport when I’ve taken him to the airport 4 times over the last two years. I’m really mad at him but my wife told me I shouldn’t have expected him to reciprocate. If I had only driven him once to the airport then I wouldn’t have assumed he’d do the same for me but I’ve driven him 4 times in the last two years. I’m the first guy he calls for any favor and this one time I need a ride he says to me to try and find someone else. My wife defended him by saying that favors for friends don’t come with strings attached but they do a little in my opinion when one friend is asking for all the favors and the other only asks ...Ask Amy: Estranged daughter still yearns for her father

Dear Amy: My daughter is 36 years old.Her father and I divorced when she was a toddler. He had all the visitation he wanted, and (reluctantly) paid child support. When she was 16, he stopped seeing her because she got her driver’s license and he said that she could drive to see him instead of him driving to see her.He lived about 40 minutes away. She had a job and was still in high school, so she didn’t drive there.Consequently, her father stopped calling her. She has sent him birthday and Christmas cards, which came back unopened. She has two sons now, and pictures she sent to him came back unopened.A few years ago, she called him to say Happy Easter and he made a few grunting noises into the phone and said that he didn’t have a daughter.Of course, she was very hurt and tearful. She’s still trying to get a positive response out of him.I told her to forget it and to move on.Related ArticlesAsk Amy | Ask Amy: A successful survivor is stuck in her past ...US's Blinken says Russia turmoil shows 'cracks' in Putin's power

The unprecedented challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin (pictured) by Wagner fighters has exposed fresh "cracks" in the strength of his leadership that may take weeks or months to play out, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday (25 June).Blinken and members of the US Congress said in a series of television interviews that the turmoil in Russia has weakened Putin in ways that could aid Ukraine's counteroffensive against Russian forces within its territory while benefiting Russia's neighbors, including Poland and the Baltic states."I don't think we've seen the final act," Blinken said on ABC's "This Week" program after an aborted mutiny by forces led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.Blinken said tensions that sparked the action had been growing for months and added that the threat of internal turmoil could affect Moscow's military capabilities in Ukraine."We've seen more cracks emerge in the Russian facade.
